Catch the flavors . . .
San Sebastián, Spain
Experience one of the oldest and most traditional Basque meals served in a rustic, farmhouse setting. Keep in mind – though peak apple cider season runs between January and May, excellent offerings are also available between October and December.
Dating back to the 11th century, the Basques would gather at different apple farmhouses dotted across the countryside to stock up on their supply – often trading fish or beef for barrels of cider. These cider houses – or "Sagardotegis" – became social hubs to cook, share tales, and take in some warmth.
Travel a mere 20 minutes outside Donostia - San Sebastián and find yourself amidst hilly and vibrant green countryside where apples are harvested and turned into cider. Enjoy your meal inside wood-beamed farmhouses and move freely between massive barrels of fresh cider - catching the different flavors in your glass.
Savor one of the more traditional Basque menus in the land offering succulent grilled txuletas (high quality, aged rib steaks), fresh cod or hake, bright omelets, vibrant salad, chorizo, cheeses, walnuts, and quince jelly. And, of course, tap into an unlimited stream of the different ciders – all with distinctive flavor profiles for you to discover.
